The Marches Cyder Company

Cyder-press-500Traditionally made full juice Herefordshire cyder and perry.

Wassail! And a warm welcome to our site!

We are artisan cyder and perry makers based in The Welsh Marches, near Leominster, Herefordshire, England.

Made in the traditional way on a ‘Rack and Cloth’ press, fermented on wild yeast, all of our cyders and perry’s are ‘un-diluted ‘full juice’ drinks and contain no artificial flavourings and colourings whatever. Indeed, it gives us great pleasure to think that folk from olden times would have trouble distinguishing our products (made with all the benefits of modern hygiene) from the wholesome and natural drink made by themselves in yesteryear. A true taste of the past and unspoilt by ‘progress’ – like grandfer used to make!

The fruit we use is largely hand-harvested and sourced only from the many traditional un-sprayed orchards that surround us in this beautiful and unspoilt part of North Herefordshire. In our produce we delight in using the many old and largely forgotten cyder apple and perry pear varieties that occur with such abundance in these parts. Having quaint and lovely names such as White Hereford, Saint Laurent, Foxwhelp, Brown Snout, Startlecock, Merrylegs, and Green Horse (to name but a few), it is a real privilege for us to be able to utilise these varieties (that our forbears would recognise) in the drinks we make. Each variety of apple or pear has its own particular characteristics which it adds to a cyder/perry when used singly or even in blends, and it is discovering these individual traits that gives great satisfaction to us as craft cydermakers as we labour to make the drinks we love.

In addition to the blended ‘MarcherMan’ cyder and ‘Marcher’ perry that we make each year, we also produce distinctive single and dual variety drinks depending on the availability to us of the fruit types necessary. This availability, quite naturally, varies from year to year (orchards can have a mind of their own!) but our ‘singles and ‘twins’ usually would include ‘Kingston Black’, Sweet Fanny Adams (Blakeney Red), Olde Cockfighter (Yarlington Mill) ‘Comely Norma’ (Cummy Norman), and ‘Black Chisel’ (Kingston Black/Chisel Jersey). We think it right and proper and love that Mother Nature has a say in what we are able to make!

We supply wholesale to pubs, clubs, hotels and wholesalers, usually in Bag-in-Box or Polybarrel.
